Which no-subscription GPS tracker should you buy?

Buy the PitPat ($229) if your dog runs where phones have signal, the Aorkuler ($249.99 with its handheld) for trails with no signal on a budget, and in the US the Garmin Alpha 300 with a TT 25 collar ($1,149.99) for up to 9 miles (14.5 km) of range. In Canada, the Dogtra Pathfinder 2 (about $438, sold at CA$624.99) shows a radio-tracked dog on your phone up to 5 miles (8 km) away. None of them has a subscription.

Which tracker suits a small dog?

Under 4 kg (9 lb), only the two 30 g units qualify, PitPat and Aorkuler. Weights and size advice from the makers' pages, 12 October 2026.

PitPat says it suits all dogs from 12 weeks old and suggests a harness for puppies and very small breeds¹; Aorkuler calls its collar unit "lightweight enough for most dogs"². Tractive lists the 39 g DOG 6 for dogs above 4 kg (8.8 lb)⁸. Dogtra lists the Pathfinder 2 for dogs from 16 kg (35 lb)⁶, and Garmin's 191.5 g TT 25, which Garmin says fits large and small breeds, weighs as much⁴: our finder proposes either only for dogs of 16 kg or more.

The two big-dog radio units are the longest and heaviest: Dogtra (86 mm, 187 g) and Garmin (81 mm, 191.5 g) against PitPat (60 mm, 30 g). Is a dog GPS tracker with no subscription really free to run?

Yes, for PitPat, Aorkuler, Garmin's Alpha and Dogtra's Pathfinder 2. They remove the monthly fee in two different ways:

Cellular, data paid by the maker. PitPat puts its own SIM in the tracker and pays for the data, and says this is not a first-year-free offer¹. You see the dog on your phone anywhere both devices have mobile signal, updated every 10 seconds in live mode.
Radio to a handheld. Aorkuler and Garmin send the collar's GPS position straight to a unit you carry, with no SIM at all^2,3. Range is the trade-off: 3.5 miles (5.6 km) for Aorkuler in open ground, up to 9 miles (14.5 km) for Garmin. Dogtra's Pathfinder 2 does the same through a small Connector that shows the map on your phone, up to 5 miles (8 km)⁶.

The subscription trackers charge for their SIM data. Tractive's GPS DOG 6 lists at $79 and needs a plan, from $108 a year on its product page and from $132 on its plans page, which says prices vary by location^8,9. Fi's Series 3+ also requires a plan: its shop showed €129 and "as low as €7.88/mo" when we read it¹⁰.

Which trackers work with no cell signal?

Only the radio ones: Aorkuler, Garmin Alpha and Dogtra Pathfinder 2. Aorkuler says plainly that it works "without a subscription, a phone, or a cell signal", that its collar unit is IP67 waterproof, and that woods, hills and buildings shorten the range when they break line of sight². PitPat and Tractive need mobile coverage on both ends; PitPat resumes once coverage is back¹. Where your dog runs on both kinds of ground, a cellular tracker goes dark on the stretches without signal, which is why our finder adds that warning to every cellular pick for mixed ground.

Is an AirTag a GPS tracker for dogs?

No. AirTag has no GPS: it sends a Bluetooth signal that nearby Apple devices relay to Find My, and Apple sells it for keys and bags¹¹. At $29 with no fee it makes a backup tag in a city full of iPhones, but it cannot show a live trail on a farm or a trail. No GPS tracker without a subscription costs under $100: the cheapest, PitPat, is $229.

Can I use a no-subscription tracker abroad?

Check two things: the network and the radio band. PitPat tracks in 34 countries it lists, including the US, Canada, the UK and most of the EU; Tractive works in 175 or more^1,8. Garmin's US Alpha uses the MURS band, and Garmin's Astro page says MURS units are approved for use only in the United States⁵, so our finder never proposes it for Canada. Aorkuler ships to over 50 countries and states no radio restriction².
